About Me:
I really started listening to SKA during high school when I was introduced to a not yet well-known band from my hometown called Less Than Jake. I soon became a regular at LTJ shows and befriended others who were at the deeper ends of the local scene. Soon I was going to ska and punk shows two to three times a week with bands like the Usuals, Baker Act, Skif Dank, Sleepy Odie, and whatever bands came through town. I also started discovering bands across the country (and world) from getting every ska comp I could get my hands on and copying friends cds and vinyls to a ancient recording format known as the cassette tape! During college (University of Florida - Fine Arts: Electronic Intermedia), I was jamming out to bands like Buck-O-Nine, The Suicide Machines, Against All Authority, Slapstick, the Specials, and the Skatalites. I went to local shows, fests, the Warped Tour, wherever I could go to get my ska fix. It also helped that there was this cool new thing called the internet that allowed me to find mp3s and better yet, a service called Napster that let me download anything and everything I wanted... of course we all know what came of that! In the midst of this, I met a girl who would later turn out to be my wife. We both graduated and moved to Southwest Florida and became teachers (I teach middle school graphic arts). Five years later, as a side project, I decided to start podcasting and create a "SKA" MySpace profile as a way to stay connected with SKA since my town has a very lacking scene. I also started creating some ska inspired designs for tshirts, mugs, etc. With the success I had from all of this, I decided to take it all a step further and create a ska web portal (skaspot.com) and a ska social network (this one) with the help of Ning.com. Through it all, these last few years, I've discovered some incredible bands, met some awesome people, and my love for the music grows stronger.

PMOG and SKA go hand in hand!

If you have no clue what PMOG is, here's a brief description (a la wikipedia). PMOG (Passively Multiplayer Online Game) is an online game which players 'passively' participate in while browsing web pages. Players earn data points by visiting unique domains, which they can spend on various game items that can be attached to web pages to trigger events when another player next visits that page. I heard about PMOG through WIRED magazine and thought I'd give it a whirl. I started on Wednesday and i… Continue

SKA Summit now has an "Easy to Add to" Events Calendar

It's about time! Ning has finally released their calendar. It's pretty easy to add an event. I just added SKAspot Live Vancouver #2. Feel free to post your upcoming shows. This calendar will also receive exposure on the SKA Toolbar and SKAspot.com as I update both. I'll keep the "Linoit" module live so bands can post larger fliers easily but I encourage bands/promoters/etc. to post their upcoming show dates on the events section also.

A SKA History Resource from National Geographic

There's a nice little article on the National Geographic website that I thought would be a useful resource for people looking for a history of ska. It focuses mostly on the origins of ska. Here's the link... http://worldmusic.nationalgeographic.com/worldmusic/view/page.basic/genre/content.genre/ska_786

You forgot the band that brought all this together in Florida mate! I too remember all them bands coming up, but remember first seeing all them bands including LTJ first playing in Ska fests organized by Ed. Of course it was also because of the great bands like the Skatelites, Hepcat, and the Toasters he persuaded to come south and play with them. In fact, my first experience with LTJ was at a ska fest in a record store called The Blue Chair (very small). They only had one 45 record at the time and yet ED let them play this two day event with twenty bands. At the time they blew my mind...wish I could still say the same. Well I guess maybe you were young! But lets give some cred because they were truly first here in FLA. And I think you should atleast mention them in your story, especially since they've re-united after 10 years. Anyway thanks for the great web site.
