SKA Band, SKA Enthusiast, Musician
About Me:
A symphony of ska music, Grim Luck is emerging from the San Diego scene like a many headed, many-horned monster. Originally founded in 2004 out of the ashes of another project Grim Luck has just taken on its ninth member, adding trombone to their already enormous lineup.
Bassist Erich Beckmann describes their music as attempting a "circus punk" feel. And with enough people in the band to fill up any stage, their performances especially in smaller venues often turn out to be much like a circus. Most of their songs are faster, with frequent tempo changes and are often inspired by obscure legends found throughout history. Their most popular work as of now is a thrashy, "skanky" song called King Lothaire, which is inspired by a French king who reigned in the first century AD.
Grim Luck is currently producing a new album in which most of the music will feature tales of television characters, mermaids, and sailing adventures from the 18th and 19th centuries. Beckmann says that although the bands individual members come from very different musical backgrounds they are all equally bored with the typical conventions of popular music. And although there are so many viewpoints directing this band, the fact that Grim Luck is meant to be the source of something novel allows all nine to communicate their vision quite well.
Their stage performance is contagious as choruses of horns and raspy screams over ska riffs set the tone for an entire room that cannot help but dance. Musically their performances are surprisingly tight despite all the activity onstage.
Looking into the future, Grim Luck is excited to steal stages and ears like a band of rag tag musical pirates who are transforming the scene one venue at a time. The novelty of this band is only matched by its ambition, and tonight's ambitious show will be well worth the time. With so many shows to still play, so many cities to visit, and the myriad characters that still need to be written into Grim Luck songs, this busy ska band has its work cut out for it. As Beckmann put it, "The world is our oyster and we will rip her from her abalone shell."
