Where SKAspotters Socialize!

So I have been touring now with a hardcore/ska band for about 4 months. The skacore scene out there is smaller than the hardcore, punk, and ska scene, so shows are typically filled with a skacore band + ska bands, or a skacore band + punk bands. It seems like people are either embracing the genre with enthuisiasm, or completely loathing it because it is not 3rd wave enough.

Collectively the members on this forum have mixed tastes, wondering how you all look at this genre.

I don't think you get my point...THIS IS TERRIBLE MUSIC AND A BASTARDIZATION OF WHAT SKA REALLY IS! This is the reason nobody can take ska music seriously anymore!

I'm not so much into throaty screaming and breakdowns but I like Skacore as a whole. I consider the Bosstones the probable beginning of ska-core and bands like the Flaming Tsunamis (and all the bands that they've influenced) the current state. In the middle I'd have to probably put bands like Leftover Crack, ASOB and later Suicide Machines who blend(ed) ska with hardcore punk elements. I don't think it should take over as the predominant form of ska but any way ska is changing to adapt is important. The fact that RX Bandits seem to be such a big influence is super-ironic considering their previously expressed opinions on it.

In my opinion, fusing genres that on the surface dont seem to fit together should be accepted with open arms. If you don't like it, don't listen. Some of my favorite skacore bands are definitely ...Detonate, Public Access, The Fad, Infamous Jake And The Pinstripe Mafia... and Folly!!

Who listens to music they don't like? ONLY MORONS! The issue here is: Ska-core ruins the real ska, since both genres sound completely different! Get it?

One could argue, though, that basic ska-punk and most of third wave ruins real ska. Ska-core is an entirely separate entity from ska, such as reggaeton is from reggae...the fanbases rarely overlap and even the uninitiated are able to separate the two: the fans have the basic sense to differentiate "ska" from "ska-core", so there's at least *some* acknowledgment of the genre's roots.

Though I'm not a fan of ska-core, I do have to agree with Anthony Alfonso; genre experimentation should be encouraged within the ska scene. If it wasn't for genre melding, where would Fishbone be? The Slackers? The Pietasters? Operation Ivy? Even the more out there genres should be given a chance: The Kingpins managed to fuse ska with breakbeat electronica and Stolen Babies fused it with goth rock, and both outcomes were fantastic. Ska is an extremely versatile genre, yet so few bands use that to their advantage.

well usually a style of music, Ska for example, has an orgin that is meant to be melodic and peacful. In grindcore's case heavy and judged by the beat or beatdown parts is what i see. A song that has both just ruins it. you might as well be listening to chiodos or something with the softest part in the song changing to the heaviest in the most common typical manner. But thats only my opinion.
