Seen a story Bud & Eric from Sublime had picked up a new singer and are playing a show tomorrow (the 24th) as Sublime. In response Bradly's estate (made up of his father & son) said it will peruse legal action to stop them from using the Sublime name.

I dont see the difference between the Long Beach Dub All-Stars that Eric & Bud formed for several years after Bradley death & the new Sublime...Except now they decided to change the name. Their other bands (The LBDAS and Long Beach Short Bus) we ok bands but were no Sublime. I think after these bands never brought them the fame and fortune of Sublime they said Why dont we just call ourselves Sublime and we can be famous again.

i think that eric and bud just wanted to be the band that they started as, and i think that this was looked into much too far. im almost positive that eric and bud were into sublime for the same reasons as bradley was. They even use bradleys voice numerous times in recordings because without him, its not the complete sublime....at that it still makes sense that they would want to be knows as sublime and not something different then what they started out with and had the most chemistry with. It makes a whole bunch of sense man, and it doesnt make a whole lot of sense why bradleys father and son would take legal action. oH WELL

It makes total sense to pursue legal action. I don't even like Sublime - in fact, I downright detest them -, but even I have to cringe at the notion of this reunion. This isn't being done for any artistic purpose on behalf of the surviving band members: if they were reforming under the name to continue writing and performing all new original material, then...well, it'd be weird, but it would carry some form of merit. Instead, they're reforming to play (and capitalize) solely on Bradley Nowell's songs, wringing his corpse of every cent left to be had from the army of naive idiot frat boys who worship their music. Imagine if, for instance, The Police reformed with only Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland, hiring a soundalike vocalist to play shows worth of nothing but songs originally written and sung by Sting. It's cheap and it's dishonest....but most of all, it's pointless. Especially in the case of Sublime: get past the nostalgia and the Cobain/Morrison-like deification of Nowell that naturally accompanies a musician's premature death, and one might realize Sublime's really not that good of a band. They just happened to cater to the right crowd.

I agree that they are just trying to capitalize on the Sublime name. If after 1-2 years they had tried this I could see the reasoning, they want the music to keep going. However they started another band had some success then fell to the wayside of modern music. Now 13 years later they are bringing back the band with the same name? F That! While the new singer is good, they are not sublime and should respect Bradley and not use the name.

Here a little storey I saw on Punknews the otherday about all this.

An interview with Sublime founding drummer Bud Gaugh was posted recently on the band's MySpace page. In it he discusses the band's October 24th reunion show at the Smokeout Festival and their new lead singer / guitarist Rome. As for future plans he revealed:

It'd be great to get back into the studio and make some new music. It'd be great to tour again. But we're taking it a step at a time and as long as each step feels good, then we’ll keep on going. One major project under development that we're psyched about is code-named "Brad's House." The idea is to provide free addiction recovery service to underprivileged teens in Brad's honor. The entire Sublime family was devastated by Brad's loss and we would like to help prevent that from happening to others. The band has agreed to allocate proceeds to get this started. We'll begin with one facility but our hope is that we can get other bands and organizations to join us and we can eventually scale it all across the country.

Sublime originally called it quits in 1996 following the heroin overdose which took the life of frontman Bradley Nowell. The band's reformation has come with a host of legal challenges. The trio's use of the name Sublime has been challenged by Silverback Management's Jon Phillips, who according to the LA Times has acted as the band's co-manager since 2003 (we're not sure how that works -ed), as well as the estate of Bradley Nowell. Nowell's family publically disapproved of the reunion and unsuccessfully tried to block it with a restraining order.

If it's really all about the music and progressing forward, then why continue with the name "Sublime"?

(Hint: it starts with a "$")

This was a response to all the bad press and comments, posted by Long Beach Shortbus (Feat. Eric Wilson) on Myspace. Not getting their way have has resulted in name calling of dissing of all of Sublime's original fans.

I agree with SKAFREAK, If they were going to keep the name Sublime, they should have done that starting in 1996, not wait 13 years and after several other attempts at making a Sublime copy have failed to get them stardom. It wasnt until after Brad's death Sublime became a big name helped by Santeria being played on major radio stations. As long as they got their fair share of record sales, they should have let it be.

This what they posted about everyone..They are even using pictures of Lou Dog, Bradly's dog.

calling all sublime fans
Body: if you have bad things to say about sublime playing music again, you aren't a fan so shut the fuck up and go away, you obviously don't like sublime, you'd rather sit behind a computer and be alone in your basement cause you're a loser. grow up, open your mind, and move out of your moms house you're not a teenager anymore. those of you that want to help bud and eric, then post this on your myspace, those of you who don't want to help bud and eric, how can you call yourself fans? you are felch mongrols

I think they should be able to do what they want to do and if people dig it, great, if they dont, oh well. I agree, they're most likely doing this to capitalize on the Sublime name, and thats a little fucked up. Bradley gave Sublime their sound, he had a very recognizable voice. When a Sublime song comes on the radio, you immediately know its them. So they will fail at trying to copy this. They will just be a spiced-up cover band. On the other hand I see no issue in playing the music that their fans love live for them, as most folks who dig sublime were just knee-high when they were doin shows. I say fuck it and let em do it. But either way, it just wont be the same as the original lineup.
