Where SKAspotters Socialize!

Well Big D has a new CD coming out July 7th called "Fluent in Stroll"

"The band calls the style of their sixth full-length record "stroll" – a mix of hopscotch, double dutch, soul, ska, and reggae. They also feel its most like their first record "Shot By Lammi". Produced by Joe Gittleman (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones). Mixed by Paul Q Kolderie (Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr., Uncle Tupelo)." - From Interpunk

Well, I've given a listen to the songs they have posted on MySpace beginning with Doped up Dollies and Fluent in Stroll as they were posted first. My first reaction was oh no, what are they doing? i was hoping big d would go back to their punkier sound and return to the big d i fell in love with, even though strictly rude was an amazing cd and got many plays. Now they posted a third song called Describing the Sky and i'm liking this song a lot more than the other two and reminds me of strictly rude some.

Anyway, can't wait for the CD to come out. I'm for sure picking it up and giving it a few spins before creating my final judgment.

If you haven't checked out the songs, i recommend heading over to their MySpace and giving them a listen!

well, to be honest with you, I really don't like the couple songs they posted...I was stoked for this album, but not so much anymore....I mean, Doped up Dollies and Fluent in stroll aren't even ska songs, and Describing the Sky sounds just like something that would be on Strickly Rude, and it doesn't feel like they're making any progress in their sound...just my opinion...maybe some of the other tracks will save the record for me...

I'm just waiting for them to go back to their thrash/ska sound that they had in the old records. That was so good!
This new style I don't like. It's like they're trying to go back to the roots with a cleaner sound and whatnot, but failing.
The first two songs I do not like. They're both REALLY similar. Describing the Sky, like Dave said, just sounds like something off Strictly Rude. Not really much fun.

A while back they were talking about after doing Strictly Rude they said something like "We want to do Strictly Rude, then maybe something like Strictly Thrash and then a Strictly Dub album." (something like that)
I was excited for the thrash album and the dub album. This doesn't seem to be either...
Sucks...

I have pre-ordered it .....I like it a lot...It is taking many of their different styles making a really new sound....I am bored with much of the music today because they won't take a chance for a new sound....they will take heat...but that is why they are different and great....they will never conform to one sound they have always been ska, punk soul .....they have won awards under different styles of music....I guess we will see...

I happen to love Describing The Sky... I don't really mind that it isn't terribly different from Strictly Rude because I loved Strictly Rude.

did some poking around the interbutt and found a copy of fluent in stroll out there.

i'm actually really surprised by this cd, it's really good! at least to me. the songs all seem to fit together and have a groovy flowing feeling to them. 'Known to be Blue' is a little random but a nice little slow part before 'I, I, I' which is pretty sweet. this cd will definitely be getting a lot of plays!

hope everyone else likes it too, or at least gives it a chance even though it is different

yeah...I have to admit I support internet piracy...but I also have the album and it is FANTASTIC...lots of variaty in sound...some ska, reggae, soul, hip hop sounding stuff...I don't think the stuff they have on their myspace is a fair representation of the album...and although I already have the album in digital format, I have it pre-ordered on LP....can't wait to get it in, the vinyl version doesn't come out til the 21st or so...

To all you folks who don't have the vinyl version, the extra track is AWESOME!!! It's a ska song, that has lots of piano on the offbeats...reminds me of Madness....

I also do not like the hip-hopish songs but I think the female backing vocals help the album out.

they should have titled it 'strictly bullshit'
