Where SKAspotters Socialize!

Hey, hey Skaspoters-

I know we've been having this argument since the 90's, but this is the first time Trad-Ska and Reggae Revivalism is actually taking the crowds back from Ska-Punk. Maybe you're happy that The Slackers and The Aggrolites are the new face of Ska; maybe you long for the days of Less Than Jake; or perhaps you think that all Ska styles can coexist.

See what's been said already and add your two cents:
Ska Blah Blah: Trad Ska vs. Ska-Punk

I dig on most everything in the ska spectrum. I think it's great that there are more Neo-trad bands coming out, I enjoy having variety. The Expos are a really amazing band that everybody should check out. That being said, I would never have gotten into any traditional ska if I weren't into ska/punk first.

trad ska is where its at. i love all the neo trad stuff. ska punk is ok but it doesnt compare to bands like the slackers or westbound train. and most ska core is lame.

There are some REALLY great bands out there that play both styles... it's great! Like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, or if you wanna get a little more recent Fatter than Albert, can break out into all the 3rd wave they want and will always go back to reggae at one point.

I love it all. Everything changes and who doesn't like a little variety? I love everything from Laurel Aitken, the Skatalites and Desmond Dekker to The Specials, Madness and Bad Manners to The Toasters, Mad Caddies and Streetlight. Plus a shit-ton more. I'm with Klaus too, in that I was introduced to other ska through ska-punk. Even if that weren't the case I'm pretty certain I'd still love it all once I found out about it. Why choose?

I'm really glad about the change in tones. I love a lot of the 3rd wave stuff but feel some of it is stagnating and just like chexas said, overrated and sucks. Though I don't want to ruffle any feathers cause I know a lot of you kids love them I just don't. So I welcome this new trend in the scene with open arms.

I've never really got into the punk-ska/skacore thing. Its always seemed to be more punk with horns rather than ska with attitude. Something got lost somewhere on the way.

I love bands like The Aggrolites, Slackers, the UKs Rebelation are a very underrated band too - thats what ska/ nu roots is about.... but some of the skacore stuff isn't ska... where's the offbeat ffs? Capdown are a great example. I've only managed to sit through one album thankfully but everyone says they're a great skacore band. Sorry... no, they're shit.

well if u see it as whos more bigger
but in tha local scenes, nd fan base i see waaaaaaay more ska punk
nd ya, i can hardly call less than jake ska punk(look up The Flaming Tsunamis, and Neighborhood Friendly..that shit is ska punk/skacore)
its seems like ska punk is just easier to get into, like anybody can go to a ska punk/skacore show nd throw themselves into a circle pit, even if u dont kno how to skank.
but to me all its good, i like both nd will listen to both, nd go to shows of both styles
...tho tha punk always comes first!!!

Just let em' coexist.
To each his own

The roots music will always weigh in heaver for the longevity of the music.
Punk influences will aways bring in younger listeners who might come to appreciate the roots.
It's all connected in some way.
