I personally remember cruisin with some friends in the car freshman year and they were rudies and we always had a grand ol time behaving badly and moving and grooving wherever we saw fit
so i got into ska cuz of all the fun and how nothing is too serious and the music is usually happy
plus theres no show like a ska show

I started attending a local youth group in 7th grade and up. We'd play tons of games and some were games that involved music playing and stopping, just like musical chairs. They would play OC Supertones and I loved the energy it brought to these fun youth games! Ska was a friend of mine ever since.

My first ska show was when I went and attended this show my friend was doing in Carona. It was at the showcase theater .I was thrown back seeing actual live skanking for the 1st time. All these bands were playing and I just wanted to skank and move with em. I, like many timid others, never just started dancing right there and then. So I took-in the site and studied it closely. I then had many hours practicing skanking in my bedroom alone, I believe to a Buck-O-Nine song i recorded on tape from the radio. I hit-up the very next show and skanked with all my heart and never stopped since!

my ex boyfriend really dug Streetlight Manifesto and plus a little before that i had quite a depressing time, and just listening to ska makes my whole entire world smile! and being able to skank is the greatest thing in the world. like, if i was paralyzed and couldn't skank anymore i would probably be the saddest person in the world! ska is just an amazing genre of music and its pretty sad theres people out there that actually don't like it!!!

Hmm...this thread is giving me deja vu....

Like a lot of people, I discovered "ska" through 'The Impression That I Get', but that actually led me to being more of a BossToneS fan than a ska-punk fan. It wasn't until later that I started digging into obscure ska-punk, going to concerts (first one: BossToneS), buying CDs (first ska-related CD I ever bought: LTJ's 'Hello Rockview')....then, since I was young and had a lot of time on my hands, I browsed through every single album labeled as 'ska' on Amazon.com. This, of course, introduced me to third-wave, then second-wave, then first-wave, then reggae, then rocksteady, etc.

I'm not sure why ska appealed to me....when I discovered it, I was mainly listening to post-punk and goth rock (Bauhaus, Joy Division, etc.). Obviously, since I was a rather unpopular, strange, hyper little man, I guess that kind of fast, offbeat music appealed to me. However, I have no idea why I now enjoy first wave and trad revival...

My older cousin Mike was a skater when he was younger. I idolized the guy, and whenever he would listen to certain cds while he was skating, I would take note of them so i could get the ones i enjoyed. It started with Sublime, then the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and I really was digging the scene these bands were from.
I was about 6 at the time that I really started listening to anything ska. I got really hardcore into the scene about age 8.

And, Mike took me to my first ska show. I have to thank him for how happy my life is.

I liked songs here and there in Junior high. Then one of my good friends got into it causing me to go: "Gee wiz, i wanna be like him" and got into it. it was easy cause I already liked it, I just wasn't really into it. Then I realised it was the music for me and now I'm a Ska-aholic.

I think the main reason I love it so much is I have such a positive outlook on life. that and the people who are into it are the exact kind of people I love. Now when i go to a local show I know 80% of the people there. it's awesome.

supose the first time i heard ska was when my dad played me the specials apparently i used to dance to it alot although then i was too young to understand what it was (i was about 3) then i went to see my big brothers band and although they werent ska they were asking ppl to skank and i aksed my big bro what this meant so he showed me then he played me bands like less than jake n reel big fish and i started to love it

then i met my mate stevie who is a massive ska fan and he got me more and more into ska as he was really the only other person i knew that would get up and skank even if no one else was!
