Ska Summit

Where SKAspotters Socialize!

This discussion is a chance for you to introduce yourself and talk about your scene. I'll start it off...
Hello, I'm Andy, creator of this network and SKAspot.com. I live in SW FL and I'm a transplant of the Gainesville, FL ska scene (Less Than Jake, The Know How, The Usuals). We don't have much of a scene where I currently live which is probably why I do so much online. Some of my favorite bands are Buck-O-Nine, LTJ, The Johnstones, MU330, The Specials, [spunge], Hepcat, The Dragonaires, Toots and the Maytals, and there's too many more to mention. I'm a graphic arts teacher at a local middle school and in my spare time I work on projects like this, podcasting, and drawing/ painting.

I'm Miles from San Jose. I'm still young at heart and love the ska. I like all types, but I am less crazy about new stuff with no connection to the source. I go to lots of shows and travel over 200 miles to see shows at least a couple time a years. The San Francisco Bay Area ska scene isn't dead, I've had lots of fun going to local shows over the years. I take lots of pictures/video clips and post them online. Check them out and leave a comment.

I like:
to skateboard
to dance/skank/mosh at live shows
ska/punk/reggae/dub music and some other kinds
to take photos and videos
to drink

My name is Andrew. I grew up near Annapolis, MD, then moved to Charleston, SC in 1996.
In 2001, I formed an organization called Fort Skumpter. The goal was to basically restart a dead ska scene in South Carolina. With the help of Jason Mallet of SC Ska, a small but respectable ska scene still exists in the Carolinas today.

In 2005, I moved to Los Angeles where I live to this day. I formed CA SKA in 2004 in anticipation of this move. CA SKA recently folded as my interests steered towards ska on a global scale. Thus, World Ska Resource was created in early 2007.

I have also street teamed for The Pietasters since 2002. I run their Yahoo Group as well as their My Space Group. I was recently asked to initiate a Pietasters entry on Wikipedia.

I think Ska Spot Network is a great idea and I hope it is a successful venture.

My name is Jacob but everyone i know calls me Hutch. I'm from a very small ska scene in Tx outside of dallas around the Plano/McKinney area. I was introduced to ska through my friends who formed a band in my school. I listened to them practice and heard what i liked. I now play drums in the band One Short. I thought it was kinda weird that the first show i ever went to was a show i played at

Hi, I'm Tromboner and I'm an alcoholic. Wait...

I'm 31, live in San Francisco, and play slide trombone. Big fan of all manner of ska music, but particularly 1st and 3rd wave. Some of the ska bands I've been fortunate (and I do mean fortunate) to have been involved with are: Pinche Hueros, The KGB, Skankin' Pickle, Regatta 69, Nate Champion, The Mighty 690, and probably others I can't remember due to the brain cell loss (see top line).

Steady now...

hi, my name is frank... and i'm a skank-a-hollic.

i live in riverside, ca but grew up in the central valley that had no "accessible" ska scene. i got into reel big fish and the aquabats and save ferris and fell in love with rock with horns. after high school i moved to LA got into the scene more and have been to a good many ska shows and am now an addict. i still live 3rd wave, but have been getting into more trad and revival lately. sadly the oc ska scene is dying but it makes me really happy to hear there are strong scenes elsewheres.

fav bands:
starpool
hepcat
the english beat

Hey my name is Matt and I live in Utah. The scene here is pretty dead, but is starting to come back. I see more and more kids getting into ska everyday. I play bass in a ska band called Frank Zigmunt and the Planeteers (myspace.com/perrysgay). I also help to promote local ska shows by promoting upcoming shows online, passing flyers, and introducing ska to kids that don't know about it. If your ska kid in Utah check out my page at myspace.com/utahskascene. I've got full support from most of the local ska/reggae bands and even the dj who plays the local music. Favorite ska bands have to be Streetlight Manifesto, Reel Big Fish, Suburban Legends.

Big ups! My name is Steph and I'm from the Jersey Shore. I first got into ska about 10 looooong years ago in college, but recently got back into the scene. I'm a history teacher at a local high school, and my students get a kick out of the fact that I still go to shows, although they hate it when I play ska during class. :( Some of my favorite bands are Ruder Than You (Philly Styleeeeee!), Westbound Train, The Toasters, The Specials, Madness, among many others. To me, there's nothing like coming home from a good show sweaty and satisfied from skanking. I'd have to agree with Rich, there's NO ska scene in South Jersey; I usually have to go to Philly or North Jersey for shows.

Feel free to comment, email, etc. It's always fun to make new friends.

I'm Alex, I'm currently attending high school in Virginia Beach. Not much ska down here, but better than where I moved from (Bellevue, Nebraska). As far as ska goes, I like a lot of the ska-punk bands referred to as "crack rock steady". I also like the Suicide Machines, Bedouin Soundclash, The Slackers, Bomb The Music Industry!, Streetlight Manifesto, etc. I make music under the alias "187 Dub Project".
