Ever go to the Blue Beat Lounge? Plenty of different styled Ska bands go rolling through there weekly.

There are probably more ska shows in LA every week than there are in the entire West Coast, so your complaint is rather unfounded and uninformed. Unless, of course, you mean '2-Tone' literally, as in the record label housing The Specials, The Selecter, The Higsons and The Bodysnatchers, then yes, I agree that they haven't played any LA shows for quite some time, especially since most of them have been disbanded since the early 1980s.

You lummox... OR he could mean shows with '2-tone' style ska.

Some of the spanish ska bands around here have a 2-tone influence. Besides that, the last band I heard play 2-tone ska was The Aggrolites (believe it or not!)! In their encore they did like 4 or 5 2-tone songs + several Clash songs. I'm sure if he weren't in The Aggrolites, Brian would have a 2-tone band.

Somehow, I doubt Brian would be in a 2 tone band given he was in Checkmate, See Spot, The Rhythm Doctors, and After Hours prior to joining The Aggrolites. Maybe... But I doubt it.

I know; it's just a weird thing to say. There are a few bands that are heavily influenced by 2-Tone throughout the LA area....RiceRokit immediately comes to mind, but I'd have to search around to find more.

True, he is all over the skinhead/early reggae, but I think 2-tone is his secret passion... shhhhh... don't tell anyone else...

I thought RiceRokit is from San Diego...

Anyway, Dave Wakeling's English Beat (obviously), Fishbone, and The Untouchables (they still around?) also come to my mind.

Yes, RiceRokit is from San Diego, but what other 2-Tone stylee bands are there in California? They play a fair amount of shows in LA. The Untouchables are still around, but they mainly play soul/mod revival stuff in concert.

Just about every week there are dancehall shows where DJs spin old-school ska, reggae, rocksteady and soul...I've seen some flyers for a few that spin 2-Tone, punk and New Wave. Damned if I know where they are, though. I don't dance nearly well enough to attend one.

Of course, you don't have to dance well, or dance at all. Half the people who do dance at these don't dance well. And a lot of people just hang out.

Bottom line to this discussion is: LA needs more 2-tone style ska bands! Like The Uptones up north, or Rude Boy from Canada. Or the slew of quality bands around the world.

The English Beat and Reel Big Fish will be playing The Nokia Theatre on July 31st and The Grove in Anaheim on August 2nd.

Be there.

I kinda feel bad for The Beat that they have to play with RBF... I'm definitely not going to see that show when it rolls around here. I've seen RBF, The Beat, and The Supervillians all before, and the Beat is the only one worth seeing again IMO.

It's not a bad idea to attend, though, since the Beat is headlining. Thus, 90% of the audience will inevitably leave once RBF finish their set. Same thing happened when they opened for the Skatalites at the first International Ska Circus...those wacky kids.
